Ian Bowles

Ian first picked up a cornet at seven years old and taught by his father, himself a cornet player and conductor, his early banding years were with the Fairwarp Silver Band in his home county of Sussex. On moving to Rugby in 1960 to take up an engineering apprenticeship, Ian joined the cornet ranks of Bilton Silver Band to become Bilton Silver (Rugby). After taking a break from playing for about five years, Ian re-joined the band in 1970 just in time to play in the national finals; 4th Section on 3rd cornet.

At various stages during the ensuing years Ian occupied every chair on the cornet ranks (including principal and soprano cornet) before joining the horn section in the 90’s to fulfil a vacancy on 1st Horn. Still playing in 2019, Ian is extremely proud to be one of a handful of current members who can claim to have represented Bilton at every level from 4th Section through to Championship grade. An active committee member he has served the band as Treasurer since 1973, and is also the bands Librarian.
